Sauna Before, During or After Training: The Kennewick Hot Room

The hot exercise room at Spinal Fitness Health and Wellness Center in Kennewick, WA uses a low-EMF Sauna Fix radiant tent that emits 550 to 3000 nm light and radiant heat, reaches a maximum of 155°F, and has no traditional preheat period. This article answers whether to use the heat before, during or after a workout, from the recovery chapter of the Spinal Fitness book and from the room’s published rules at 214 E. Albany Ave, Building E101, Kennewick, WA 99336. New visitors can see the tent on any Thursday between 2 and 6 PM, when a free session is offered, and members keep 24/7 access with a door code once their training is complete.

What the book says about heat around training

Chapter 20 of Eileen Durfee’s book, Spinal Fitness, places sauna on both sides of a training session. Before training, it gives 10 to 15 minutes at a comfortable intensity. After training, it gives a second sauna session, followed by a shower and rehydration with minerals.

The book states that sweating loses minerals and that the replacement should be sodium, potassium, magnesium and trace minerals, not only water. It describes the Sauna Fix as not a standard far-infrared sauna, and it lists red and near-infrared light, heat, oxygen, circulation, minerals, protein, sleep and appropriate pacing as supports for cellular energy.

Option 1: heat first, then the gym floor

A 10 to 15 minute pre-training sauna session fits the book’s guidance, and because the tent has no preheat period, the session starts when the member steps in. The equipment on the same 24/7 access includes a PowerCore Stepper, an elliptical, a Bowflex TreadClimber, a bicycle, free weights and benches, along with spinal fitness and posture-focused training tools.

Option 2: heat during exercise

The room’s own session runs 20 to 40 minutes, standing or sitting, with eyewear worn and towels used to wipe sweat through the session. The center’s page describes exercise in radiant heat as an intense training environment and states that duration and effort should build gradually rather than being handled like an ordinary room-temperature workout. A public session requires a swimsuit; a private session is bare skin.

Option 3: heat after training

Members may also use the near-infrared saunas without exercising, first come, first served, 24/7. That makes the book’s post-training sauna session available after a workout on the gym equipment or after a 20-minute Spinal Fitness training session, followed by the shower and mineral rehydration the book specifies.

The Month-to-Month membership at $150 includes the near-infrared saunas and the general and spinal fitness equipment, with 24/7 member access after training. The Google Business Profile lists both the near-infrared sauna session and the hot near-infrared exercise room as included services.

Screening and stop signs

Before first use, every member completes a safety screen and receives hydration guidance. The page’s stop list for exercise in the room: never continue through dizziness, nausea, confusion, unusual shortness of breath or faintness. The book adds: anyone who is pregnant, medically fragile, heat-intolerant, severely dehydrated, or managing cardiovascular, kidney, neurological, endocrine or medication-sensitive conditions should consult a qualified healthcare provider before using sauna therapy.

Who you are booking with

The hot room is self-directed after training: once training is complete, members use it on their own schedule. Eileen Durfee founded the center, has worked in the health field since 2010, and is a Certified Personal Trainer and the inventor of Spinal Fitness; evaluations and one-on-one training sessions are booked with her. Among the equipment services, only Biofeedback and Rife is supervised and sold by session.
