From Magnetic Pulse to Muscle Contraction: The Pelvic Core Chair in Kennewick

The pelvic magnetic core chairs at Spinal Fitness Health and Wellness Center in Kennewick, WA produce high-intensity electromagnetic pulses that reach the pelvic floor and core muscles and make them contract, thousands of times in a 15-to-30-minute session, while you sit fully clothed. The mechanism has 3 steps: a magnetic pulse from a coil in the seat, an electric field induced in tissue, and a contraction in the muscle. The center has 3 stations. Members hold 24/7 access through a door code once training is complete, and every Thursday from 2 to 6 PM new visitors can take a free session of 1 rotating service.

Step 1: a strong, fast magnetic pulse

A coil in the seat carries a brief, intense burst of electric current, which produces a magnetic field that rises and falls within the pulse. The field passes through clothing and skin into the pelvis without contact; nothing is attached to the body and no electrode touches the skin. The center’s PEMF service uses weak pulsed fields, and most people feel little or nothing during a PEMF session. The pelvic chair uses high-intensity pulses that make the muscles contract, and the center offers it as an exercise service.

Step 2: induction in tissue

By Faraday’s law of induction, a changing magnetic field induces an electric field in a conductor, and tissue conducts because it holds water with dissolved ions such as sodium and potassium. A 2004 paper by M. N. Martins of the University of Sao Paulo Institute of Physics, on the physics of magnetic stimulation, states that “a fast and intense pulse of magnetic field may produce localized electric fields, suitable to generate electric currents in certain tissues.” Nerves and muscles run on electrical signals: a voluntary contraction starts when a motor nerve fires and the muscle fibers it supplies contract. The current induced by the chair’s pulse reaches the motor nerves that supply the pelvic floor and core; when that current fires a motor nerve, the muscle fibers it supplies contract with no signal from the brain, which is why the contraction is involuntary.

Step 3: the contraction

The center’s page describes the result: the pulses “trigger involuntary contractions – the muscles engage and release over and over, the way they would during focused exercise, without you having to do anything.” You may feel a mild tingling as the pulses begin, then strong rhythmic contractions. Intensity is raised gradually to your comfort level, and the chair produces no heat.

Why the pelvic floor and core

The pelvic floor is the group of muscles across the base of the pelvis. The center’s page describes the pelvic floor and core as muscles that are hard to isolate with ordinary exercise, which is the reason for training them in a seated chair. Eileen describes the diaphragm and pelvic floor as the pressure system of the trunk, working with the transverse abdominis, the obliques, the rectus abdominis and the deep spinal stabilizers to control how the spine moves. In Spinal Fitness training those muscles are trained by voluntary exercise; the chair adds involuntary contractions alongside that training.

Cadence and session setup

The center’s published protocol is 3 to 5 sessions per week for 8 to 12 weeks, then about once a month for maintenance; the page adds that consistency matters more than any single session. You stay seated and fully clothed. Avoid metal clothing components near the equipment: a zip, a stud or a heavy buckle. A soft waistband keeps metal away from the chair. Members who have completed their training run their own sessions, and the center schedules time slots for its 3 machines.

Screening first

The chair is off-limits during pregnancy and for anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device. Check with your healthcare provider before booking if you have metal implants in the hips or pelvis, recent surgery, or a medical condition affecting the pelvic area. Screening is reviewed with every guest before the first session.

Visiting the center in Kennewick

A single 30-minute session is $30. The free Thursday session for new visitors, 2 to 6 PM, rotates 1 service per week among the BioCharger NG, the 7 Wave light panel, Brown’s Gas, PEMF and the hot exercise room. Spinal Fitness Health and Wellness Center is at 214 E. Albany Ave, Building E101, Kennewick, WA 99336, serving Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, West Richland, Benton City and Walla Walla. Call or text 509-670-9713. Eileen Durfee founded the center, has worked in the health field since 2010, and is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer.
